Every film leads somewhere

Chains are curated paths through cinema — each film linked to the next by a shared director, actor, theme, or wildcard connection. Build your own or follow chains made by the community.

How to build a chain

1

Pick a starting film

Any film in the database can be the starting point. Choose one you love or one you want to explore from.

2

Choose a connector

Link the next film by director ("same director as..."), actor ("also starring..."), theme ("visually similar to..."), or wildcard ("you might also like...").

3

Add the next film

Search for a film that fits the connector. The search suggests films by the same director, actor, or genre to help you.

4

Keep building

Chains can be any length — from two films to dozens. Add a description for each link to explain the connection.

Example chain walkthrough

Here's a real Chain built on KinoChain:

1. **The Social Network** (2010, dir. David Fincher)
↓ *Same director as...*
2. **Zodiac** (2007, dir. David Fincher)
↓ *Also starring...*
3. **Brokeback Mountain** (2005, starring Jake Gyllenhaal)
↓ *Thematically similar...*
4. **Carol** (2015, forbidden love, period setting)
↓ *You might also like...*
5. **Portrait of a Lady on Fire** (2019)

Each link tells a story about why these films belong together. You can fork any chain, add your own links, and create alternate paths.
