Tideland

Watched this in 2005 at a special screening at the Hay on Wye literary festival. It was on late, on our last day and was followed by a Q&A with Terry Gilliam. Being a lifelong Gilliam fan, my wife and I had no choice but to attend and drive 3 hours home when it finished at 11pm. By the time the Q&A started, I was so angry. Why the hell had we stayed late to watch this piece of utter shit? I grumbled through the Q&A. The only question I wanted to ask was why Tideland was such a complete turdfest. As we drove home, talking about the film and all the things we hated about it, we soon realised that we had both talked ourselves around to the fact that this was an absolute masterpiece of a film. If nothing else, the film had us talking about it non stop for the entire journey home. I saw Michael Palin describe it as either Gilliam's best or worst film. I've not watched it since and not sure I want to but I reckon he's right. Both 5 stars and 0 stars at the same time. And wouldn't it be great to have films that divide even your own opinions made now?
