Biography
Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli, known mononymously as S. S. Rajamouli, is an Indian film director and screenwriter who predominantly works in Telugu cinema. Born on October 10, 1973, in Amareshwara Camp, Raichur district (present-day Karnataka), he is the son of acclaimed veteran screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad. He began his filmmaking journey working in television serials under director K. Raghavendra Rao and assisting in script development before transitioning into full-length feature direction. He made his directorial debut with the coming-of-age action film *Student No.1* (2001) and established an unprecedented, unblemished 100% box-office success record across his entire filmography. Over two decades, he directed a streak of landmark blockbusters including *Simhadri* (2003), *Sye* (2004), *Chatrapathi* (2005), *Vikramarkudu* (2006), *Yamadonga* (2007), the industry-redefining fantasy drama *Magadheera* (2009), the comedy-drama *Maryada Ramanna* (2010), and the groundbreaking fantasy film *Eega* (2012). He revolutionized modern Indian cinema by pioneering the pan-Indian film movement with his epic two-part franchise *Baahubali: The Beginning* (2015) and *Baahubali 2: The Conclusion* (2017)—which became the first Indian film to gross over ₹10 billion—followed by the global phenomenon *RRR* (2022). Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema history, Rajamouli is celebrated for his epic grandeur, high-concept emotional stakes, and seamless integration of cutting-edge visual effects with classical Indian mythology. His numerous accolades include the Padma Shri (2016), four National Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards South, five Nandi Awards, the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Director, two Saturn Awards, and a Critics' Choice Movie Award. In 2023, he was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by *Time* magazine, and in 2026, his name was permanently commemorated on the prestigious *Mur des Cinéastes* (Wall of Filmmakers) at the Institut Lumière in Lyon, France.
