Happiness

1998 · TMDB 7.4

Directed by Todd Solondz

The lives of several individuals intertwine as they go about their lives in their own unique ways, engaging in acts which society as a whole might find disturbing in a desperate search for human connection.

Why it matters

Todd Solondz's New Jersey ensemble comedy in which suburbanites confess to paedophilia, obscene phone calls and quiet despair. The camera never stylises, the colours never lift, and the evenness of tone is the most disturbing thing about it.
