Directed by Stephen Frears

A small-time conman has his loyalties torn between his estranged mother and his new girlfriend, both of whom are high-stakes grifters with their own angles to play.

Why it matters

Stephen Frears again, this time in America, adapting Jim Thompson's novel about a small-time con man (John Cusack) caught between his mother (Anjelica Huston) and his girlfriend (Annette Bening). The film is a masterclass in the performance of trust.
