Dancing Against the Current: Eight Films of Rebellion in Motion
Position 8 of 8
A young ballerina is torn between her art and her love, and the film's centrepiece ballet sequence remains a landmark of cinematic fantasy. Moira Shearer's Vicky Page dances herself to the edge of destruction.
The Face Is the First Casualty
Position 3 of 8
Powell and Pressburger's ballet tragedy follows Victoria Page, a dancer whose body is claimed by a company, a composer, and a svengali impresario. Jack Cardiff's colour and the seventeen-minute ballet sequence make the destruction of a performer feel like an act of art.
