When a Mother's Love Turns Stranger

A chain of horror films that treat the family home as a stage for maternal dread, from Polanski's Dakota to the doubles of Jordan Peele and the uncanny Other Mommy.

· ·

Other Mommy arrives with a premise that horror has circled for decades: the mother who is almost herself. In Natalie Erika James's film, young Bela bonds with an entity in her house that wears her mother's face, and the terror lies less in the thing than in the intimacy it mimics. The household becomes a place where love and menace share a silhouette. That doubling is the thread this chain follows: not monsters at the door, but the familiar made strange inside it.

Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby sets the template, turning a New York apartment into a conspiracy of neighbours and a pregnancy into a slow possession. Jennifer Kent's The Babadook pushes further, making grief and exhaustion the engine of the haunting, with Essie Davis giving a performance of raw, unglamorous fury. Between them, these films establish the grammar the rest of the chain bends: the mother as both protector and threat, the home as a container for what cannot be said aloud.

What makes the sequence cohere is its refusal to separate maternal love from its shadow. Lynne Ramsay's Morvern Callar and Alice Lowe's Prevenge sit at the edges, one a study of grief displaced into drift, the other a revenge comedy where an unborn child speaks for the mother's rage. Jordan Peele's Us widens the frame to a national double, but its most unnerving scenes stay in the family living room. Seen in order, these films argue that the uncanny home is not a set of jump scares but a way of looking at care itself: what it costs, what it hides, and who gets to be the real mother.

Other Mommy
1

Other Mommy

2026 · dir. Rob Savage · 93 min

Natalie Erika James follows Relic with a story of a girl and a sinister double of her mother, staged inside a house that feels both safe and wrong.

Other Mommy → Rosemary's Baby

The Link

Other Mommy's double is a private, domestic haunting; Polanski's film shows the same dread scaled up to a building full of smiling conspirators, establishing the maternal body as the site where the uncanny enters.

Rosemary's Baby
2

Rosemary's Baby

1968 · dir. Roman Polanski · 138 min

Polanski's apartment-bound nightmare turns pregnancy into a negotiation with unseen forces, with Mia Farrow's pale, watchful performance holding the centre.

Rosemary's Baby → The Babadook

The Link

Where Polanski keeps the threat external, Kent locates it in the mother herself, so the double in Other Mommy reads as a natural next step: the thing that looks like her is also the thing she fears becoming.

The Babadook
3

The Babadook

2014 · dir. Jennifer Kent · 94 min

Jennifer Kent's debut makes a pop-up book the vector for a mother's exhaustion and grief, with Essie Davis giving one of the great unravelling performances in modern horror.

The Babadook → Relic

The Link

The Babadook's haunting is psychological; Relic makes it architectural, so the home itself becomes the unreliable narrator that Other Mommy will later exploit.

Relic
4

Relic

2020 · dir. Natalie Erika James · 89 min

Natalie Erika James's first feature follows three generations of women in a house that seems to rearrange itself around dementia, with Robyn Nevin's matriarch both vulnerable and alarming.

Relic → Morvern Callar

The Link

Relic's house is a container for loss; Ramsay's film takes that loss on the road, showing a woman whose interior life has become as strange to her as a haunted room.

Morvern Callar
5

Morvern Callar

2002 · dir. Lynne Ramsay · 97 min

Lynne Ramsay's adaptation of Alan Warner's novel drifts through grief and hedonism, with Samantha Morton's blank, watchful face doing most of the talking.

Morvern Callar → Prevenge

The Link

Morvern Callar's grief is mute; Prevenge gives it a voice, and a foetal one at that, pushing the maternal double into black comedy and making the unborn child a character in its own right.

Prevenge
6

Prevenge

2017 · dir. Alice Lowe · 89 min

Alice Lowe wrote, directed and starred while pregnant, playing a widow whose unborn child urges her toward violence with deadpan cheer.

Prevenge → The Others

The Link

Prevenge's rage is loud; The Others returns to the hushed, candlelit house and shows how a mother's protectiveness can curdle into denial, a quieter version of the doubling in Other Mommy.

The Others
7

The Others

2001 · dir. Alejandro Amenábar · 101 min

Alejandro Amenabar's gothic chamber piece keeps Nicole Kidman's mother in a house of locked doors and photosensitive children, with a twist that reframes everything before it.

The Others → Us

The Link

The Others keeps its double hidden; Peele brings it into the living room, turning the uncanny home into a national mirror and closing the chain where Other Mommy began: a mother, a child, and a face that is almost right.

Us
8

Us

2019 · dir. Jordan Peele · 116 min

Jordan Peele's second feature sends a family to the coast and then brings their doppelgangers home, with Lupita Nyong'o's dual performance as the chain's most physical doubling.
